Yesterday, I made a new friend named Fatima. Fatima is 18 years old and studies at a high school in Hong Kong called United World College (UWC). Fatima is from Sierra Leone, Africa and has 3 siblings, 1 older brother and 2 sisters. Fatima is staying at my friend Nitya's house because she cannot afford to go home for the winter break. Fatima wears a hijab because she is a Muslim and that is the traditional dress for where she is from. When she is at school, she wears a hat instead. Fatima wants to be a doctor in Africa when she grows up. She is very worried about a disease called Ebola.
Ebola is a disease that started in Guinea in Africa. It spread to Liberia and Sierra Leone when sick people moved to those countries. Ebola spreads through bodily contact, or fluids like vomit, saliva and blood. The current outbreak of Ebola started almost one year ago and nearly 2000 people have become infected and 1000 people have died. Nine doctors who have been treating Ebola have died. I think it is very brave that Fatima wants to be a doctor in Africa.
